Its well known that airlines like Southwest and Jetblue don’t usually allow travel meta-searchers to query their databases, forcing you instead to go direct to the airlines own websites to search and buy flights, rather than through a third party like Sidestep.

Southwest have a weekly ‘Hotfares’ page and an email newsletter but no RSS feeds. They do have a little downloadable application for your desktop though called ‘Ding’. It might be worth the download.

Spirit Airlines is a United States low-cost airline operating nationwide scheduled and charter flights. The airline is headquartered in Miramar, Florida. About a quarter of the airline’s flights are to destinations in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Latin America.

The companies main hubs are Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood and Detroit Metro.

If you’re always on the look out for crazy bargains its worth signing up for the airlines $9 fare club. For instance tis past week there has been $9 (each way) fares to Puerto Rico from Fort Lauderdale.

Spirit Airlines have a bunch of flights on offer for little over 24 hours from today at the basement price of one cent.

Outbound from Florida there are flights from Fort Lauderdale to Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Orlando to Nassau, Bahamas. Going the other direction there is Nassau, Bahamas to Orlando, Detroit to Tampa and Atlantic City to Fort Lauderdale.

The deals are up until 11.59 EST tomorrow or until they sell out.

Not a typo but a limited offer with Hertz’s Florida “Drive Out” Program. If you’re going to be in Florida sometime between April 8 and June 30, you can rent a car and go on a northerly road trip for as little as $1 a day. The deal is you have to drive the car out of Florida to follow the snowbirds north. There are 35 cities on the list you can choose from. The program includes economy through full-size cars and SUVs, as well as unlimited mileage, and no drop-off charges. Pick up locations in Florida are: Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Orlando, West Palm Beach, Fort Myers, Miami and Tampa.

Joining in the fray of predictive holiday and flight search is Hotwire, following on the heels of Farecast and Fare Compare. A Fare Prediction shows if the lowest fare is rising or dropping over the next seven days for the specific dates and cities searched (according to the Farecast website). So, in laymans terms they basically ‘predict’ when its cheapest to go.

Hotwire’s offering is called Trip Starter and my seaching for a trip to Las Vegas from my local airport at Fort Myers returned a graph showing airfare and hotel price fluctuations by the month.

Best time to fly, according to Trip Starter is January, February and September. Best time to stay, July, August and December. They advise to avoid the crowds, go during the first three weeks in December or on weekdays in July.

One advantage Trip Starter has over its rivals is that by plugging in the results to Hotwire affiliate Trip Advisor they are able to offer local guides, events and maps, something Farecast and Fare Compare dont offer right now.

I rambled on here about finding flights and deals online in the ‘traditional’ manner using meta-searchers so you dont have to visit each individual travel site etc, but there is an even more time efficient way by using RSS. I’m assuming that readers have some entry level knowledge of RSS, if not, read this to get some background on the format that’ll help save you bundles of time.

I use the Sage RSS reader in my Firefox browser. Its a great lightweight way of reading RSS feeds without having to log-in to an online reader or fire up a desktop stand alone ( I use Feed Demon for more heavy duty feed trawling). Once you’ve installed Sage in Firefox you can open it in a browser sidebar to view your feeds.

The “big three” online travel agents, Travelocity, Expedia and Orbitz all now offer various RSS feeds.

You can customize the feeds to your own search preferences in Expedia. They offer hotel and flight combo’s or just individual flights or hotel feeds. The Florida departure cities covered so far are Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Orlando with Fort Myers and Disney and West Palm Beach added to that list as destinations (as well as other destinations in the USA and Europe). You build your travel preferences, agree to the T&C’s and a feed is built. OK, here was the mission. Find the cheapest return flight from my local airport in Fort Myers (RSW), Southwest Florida International (which is just under 25 miles away and maybe a forty minute drive from my current home in Cape Coral) to my old home back in London, UK.

You can use the same resources for any destination of course but I’ll use this route as an example.

Firstly I decided on a date and to fly midweek when airfares are usually cheaper. So for examples sake we have an outbound flight on Tuesday, March 6th and a return on Wednesday, March 21st.

London Airports

Searching for flights in London, UK is actually a little misleading for none-Brits as both the two largest airports Heathrow (19 miles away in Middlesex) and Gatwick ( 28 miles away in Sussex) are actually well outside the city as are the other major ‘London’ destinations, Luton (43 miles away in Bedfordshire) and Stansted (38 miles away in Essex). The only London airport actually inside London itself is London City.

So, we’ll stick to Heathrow and Gatwick as the main choices as these are the main long haul destinations. First we check with the top four search aggregators.
